|Λ–Z|

Studio installation, 2025
National Art School Postgraduate Exhibition, Sydney

|Λ–Z| developed through a sequence of perceptual and spatial encounters in the studio. Beginning with the existing architecture, forms and associations accumulated through making, observation and adjustment.

The existing column in the studio became the starting point for the installation. A foam form placed beside it produced a Z-like shadow; from another position, the relationship suggested Λ / A. Each observation generated the next intervention, as lines, planes and materials extended through the space.

The play between A and Z shifted again through the two existing columns, which suggested the vertical bars of an absolute value sign: |A–Z|.

When the work had to be priced for exhibition, “value” acquired another meaning. The fixed price sat uneasily against the less measurable value of an artwork, extending a spatial and mathematical encounter into a question of how art is valued.
