Open Cube2 2022

Award: 2022 John Olsen Prize for Drawing (Highly Commended)

Open Cube² began as an exploration of the relationship between two-dimensional form and three-dimensional structure. Developed through drawing, constructed forms and site-specific installation, the project experimented with layers of real and illusionary space, using the architecture of the gallery and the viewer's changing position as part of the work.

plasterboard, red paper, tracing paper, black yarn, acrylic sheet, glass, ink, pencil, charcoal, pins and nails

Developed from a small red-paper cube, the installation uses the architectural corner as an open cube that the viewer can physically enter. Lines, materials and constructed elements extend this structure through the surrounding space, producing variations of a cube within a cube.
